A one-of-a kind office building, serving as the headquarters for HEMA
Number One serves as the headquarters for HEMA and was specifically created for this quintessential Dutch department store. With its robust, massive and rugged look, it fits well with the architecture and the industrial character of NDSM.

Pioneer
A former shipping wharf in the North-West of Amsterdam, NDSM is now a buzzing new urban district with exciting opportunities for living, working and leisure. Number One – a one of a kind, industrial looking office building – was the first (and our first!) development in NDSM-West and it proved to be a true pacesetter for the further growth of this area.

Proud home of HEMA
The HEMA headquarters have been located in Number One at the wharf since 2010.
Before then, HEMA’s office was located in Amsterdam Southeast, which caused problems in terms of accessibility for the staff. In cooperation with the municipality, the accessibility of Noord was improved by making the connecting ferry run more often. After the arrival of HEMA, many more retail companies set foot on the NDSM Wharf.

Pilot store
With about 600 employees, HEMA is the largest tenant in the building. With its rugged look, the building, designed by architect Bronsvoort Blaak with an emphasis on flexibility, subtly references to the industrial wholesale buildings of the 1950s. Its vertical façade fits well with the Kraanspoor. HEMA also opened a store on the ground floor, which was a big hit right from the start. Since the store is in the same building as the headquarters, the location was perfect for testing new concepts such as store floor layouts, and so it became a pilot store.
Setting the tone for NDSM
The Number One building is made up of two sections, separated by a unique roof garden at six meters, and connected at the two upper floors. With the use of typical materials and the industrial design, Number One is a true NDSM building: recognizable yet truly unique.
Slowly but surely the NDSM district is becoming a multifunctional and vibrant new urban neighborhood. Number One has played a big role in showcasing NDSM’s potential and attracting more buzz to this area.
