About Bloom Merwede

The perfect balance between city life and peaceful living: that’s what Bloom in Merwede is all about. This new sustainable district close to Utrecht’s city center turns dreams into reality.

Merwede used to be an industrial area in the outskirts of Utrecht. However, thanks to the ambitious vision of G&S&, other developers and our fantastic partners, we managed to turn this area into a vibrant urban neighborhood. Bloom – the part of Merwede that G&S& is developing - is designed as a unique sustainable urban district: low-traffic, surrounded by water and lots of lush vegetation. And Utrecht’s bustling city center is just a short bike ride away!

Living the green life in the middle of Utrecht.

A mix of everything
Living, recreational activities, urban amenities and sustainable green spaces.

A mix of everything:
Here, you can find a varied mix of approximately 1000 homes, ranging from spacious townhouses to apartments. Within this urban district G&S& is developing 218 owner-occupied homes: 19 townhouses, 88 bold apartments and 111 city apartments.

All homes have their own special features and personality. From urban to green, and from industrial to elegant. Green courtyards, water gardens, playgrounds and roof gardens all add to the health and happiness of the residents.

Second-hand steel
The architects of Bloom, ANA architecten, Rijnboutt and INBO, envisioned Bloom as a healthy, sustainable and mixed city district providing an enormous quality of life. They designed all buildings to have their own typology, materials and colours. For various buildings, they used sustainable façade materials like second-hand steel, wood, recycled glass and used bricks. Thanks to the dry stacking methods the bricks can easily be reused.

Sustainable living
Bloom is all about sustainability and eco-friendly living. We’ve taken sustainability to the next level with this project, making Bloom Merwede one of the most sustainable projects in the Netherlands. All homes are connected to a collective ground-coupled heat exchanger, which generates renewable electricity. In addition, all homes are equipped with a balanced ventilation system and 50% of the rooftops are covered with solar panels. This way, the environmental impact is kept to a minimum.

Connecting people and animals
At Bloom, all living creatures – this means people and animals – live together in harmony. Unrestrained nature, green roofs and nest boxes tucked away in the facades, will ensure a healthy ecosystem where animals such as butterflies and hedgehogs can thrive. But human connections thrive as well at Bloom: weekly events are organized by the home owners, such as festivals in the summer and various workshops. Up to 600 creative companies have settled in the area, just as several restaurants and a beer brewery. Now that’s what the good life is all about!
